Two of these questions will be asked by the Examiner on your driving test

Question 1

Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check the engine has sufficient engine coolant.

Answer – Point out the coolant expansion tank (the oval plastic container to the left as you look at the engine on a Fiesta) and explain the minimum/maximum markings. If the coolant is below the minimum mark you would need to remove the cap and pour in coolant until the maximum mark has been reached.

Question 2

Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.

Answer – Point out the brake fluid reservoir (on the firewall between the coolant expansion tank on the left and the engine to its right) and explain that the level should be just below the maximum.

Question 3

Tell me how you’d check the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.

Answer – If the steering becomes heavy there may be something wrong with steering. Before starting a journey two simple checks can be made: 1) gentle pressure on the steering wheel, maintained whilst the engine is started, should result in a slight but noticeable movement as the system begins to operate, 2) turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assisted steering is functioning properly.

Question 4

Tell me how you’d check that the brake lights are working on this car.

Answer – Activate the brake pedal and make use of reflections in garage doors, etc. to see if the brake lights come on or ask someone to help.

Question 5

Open the bonnet and tell me how you’d the engine has sufficient oil level.

Answer – Identify the dipstick (a yellow ring on the top of the engine for an ecoboost Fiesta), explain that you would pull it out and wipe it to avoid misleading readings. After putting the dipstick back for a few seconds you would take it out again and check to see if the oil is between the minimum/maximum markings.

Question 6

When it is safe to do so can you show me how you’d operate the horn?

Answer – Check that is not misleading in any way and press the horn.

Question 7

When it safe to do so, can you show me how you would wash and clean the front windscreen?

Answer – pull the wiper stalk towards the steering wheel until the windscreen wash sprays onto the windscreen and the wipers begin to operate and a reasonable amount of screen wash is sprayed onto the front windscreen.

Question 8

When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d open and close the side window?

Answer – push down the right window switch located below the mirror adjusters on the driver’s door until the window goes down a bit, pull up the button to close the window.

Question 9

Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.  You don’t need to exit the vehicle.

Answer – In this car you would need to turn the ignition to the second stage, then turn the headlights on and walk around to check that all the lights are working.

Question 10

Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how the tyre pressures should be checked.

Answer – Information will be found in the owner’s handbook, make sure you check the pressures for the right tyre size and load. Check the pressure of the tyres using a reliable pressure gauge while the tyres are cold. Don’t forget to check the spare tyre and refit the dust caps when you’re finished.

Question 11

Tell me how you would check the tyres to show they have sufficient tread depth and their general condition is safe to use on the road.

Answer – A safe tyre will have no cuts or bulges. The tread depth should be at least 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference.

Question 12

When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you’d set the rear demister?

Answer – press the rear demister button located on the vent selector panel next to the fan dial, wait a couple of seconds and then press it again to turn it off.

Question 13

Tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them.  There is no need to exit the vehicle.

Answer – turn the ignition to the second click, turn on the headlights by turning the headlight dial one turn to the left and then press the fog button (which is the bottom button to the left of the headlight dial) and point out the warning light on the dashboard. Say you would use the rear fog light when visibility is below 100 metres. After answering the question switch the fog light off and then the headlight dial one turn to the right (so that it is back on the automatic setting) and ignition.

Question 14

Tell me how you would switch your head lights from dipped to main beam and explain how you’d know the main beam is on.

Answer – turn the ignition on to second stage and switch on the headlights by turning the headlight dial one turn to the left. Then push the indicator stalk towards the dashboard, point out the blue warning light on the dashboard and then switch the main beam off by pushing the indicator stalk again. Then set the headlights back to automatic by turning the headlight dial one turn to the right and then turn off the ignition.

Question 15

Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.

Answer – The head restraint should be adjusted so that the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eyes or top of the ears and is as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. In some cars the head restraint might not be adjustable.

Question 16

Tell me how you’d know there is a problem with your anti-lock braking system.

Answer – An amber warning light saying “ABS” should illuminate if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.

Question 17

Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before a journey.

Answer – As you move off check the brakes, they should not be spongy or slack and the car should not pull to one side.

Question 18

When it is safe to do so, can you show me how you’d wash and clean the rear windscreen?

Answer – push the wiper stalk on the right-hand side of the steering column towards the dashboard until the rear wiper starts to operate and screen wash sprays onto the window.

Question 19

When it’s safe to do so, can you show me how you’d switch on your dipped headlights?

Answer – turn on the dipped headlights by turning the headlight dial one turn to the left, wait a few seconds and turn back to automatic by turning the headlight dial one turn to the right.

Question 20

When its safe to do so, can you show me how you’d demist the front windscreen?

Answer – in most cars you would need to turn the vent selector to windows and turn on the fan, but in this car is fitted with a heated front windscreen so you can demist the front windscreen by pressing this button (press the button in the middle at the bottom of the vent selector panel to turn on the demister, wait a few seconds and then press it again to switch it off).

How to open the bonnet on a 2018 Ford Fiesta

Opening the bonnet:

The bonnet catch is located by the passenger door.  Hook your fingers underneath the catch and pull it towards you to release the bonnet.

Just above the ‘d’ in the Ford badge put your hand underneath the bonnet and push the release catch to the left.

Lift bonnet and put the support brace in.

Closing the bonnet:

Remove bonnet brace from bonnet and return to clip

Gently lower the bonnet until it rests.

Lean on the bonnet and gently apply pressure until you hear the bonnet catch spring back into place.
